Poe Blythe is a girl living in a village that is rarely ventured out of. When the people of her village do get to leave, it’s generally to troll the nearby river for gold. On one of these expeditions in which Poe and her longest friend are on, raiders take over their ship and her friend is killed.
Poe makes it her mission to get revenge on the raiders and creates armor for the ships that make them impenetrable. She soon finds herself the captain of the last voyage down the river to mine gold. But her world is turned upside down when she learns that things aren’t always what they seem.
I loved the message of this book. Just because you are told something your entire life, does not meant it’s always true. Sometimes people only have their own best interests at heart and not yours. Often we have to go out in the world and experience things for ourselves in order to have a better understanding.
Thank you so much to Penguin Teen for sending along this lovely ARC.
“I have seen the dead, just hours ago. I have seen the way their eyes look.
Something goes when you go.
That is the magic, the alchemy: the primitive, deep-seated element that is in you–that is you–while you live, and which leaves the moment you die. You can’t get it back. Nothing can buy it. No amount of tears will ever call it home.”
-Ally Condie, The Last Voyage of Poe Blythe

Synopsis: Who do you become when you have nothing left to lose?
There is something Poe Blythe, the seventeen-year-old captain of the Outpost’s last mining ship, wants far more than the gold they tear from the Serpentine River.
Revenge.
Poe has vowed to annihilate the river raiders who robbed her of everything two years ago. But as she navigates the treacherous waters of the Serpentine and realizes there might be a traitor among her crew, she must also reckon with who she has become, who she wants to be, and the ways love can change and shape you. Even—and especially—when you think all is lost.
Ally Condie, the international bestselling author of the Matched trilogy, returns with an intricately crafted and emotionally gripping story of one young woman’s journey to move beyond the grief and anger that control her and find the inner strength to chart her own course.
